A newer build usually vents short and straight through a side wall; an older one can run twenty feet through a joist bay before it reaches daylight. The long ones are where lint collects and where flexible pipe sags into a low spot. We find the run first, then decide what it actually needs.
Cleaning is the usual answer. Sometimes it is not: a smashed duct behind the dryer, a termination with no working damper, or a run that should never have been vented where it was. We quote flat either way, before we start, and we show you what we saw on the way out.
